Noether inequality for projective varieties of general type deals with the relation of two important birational invariants: the canonical volume and the genus. The classical Nother inequality for surfaces has played an important role in the study of the “geography” problem of surfaces.

In this talk I will first review the known results on the Noether inequality for 3-folds of general type. Then I will report the recent progress towards proving the inequality.

The results comes from a joint work in progress with Prof. Meng Chen.
