Pharmaceutical compounds may interfere with the electrical activity of the heart and cause life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. The problem with today's mandatory preclinical safety tests is their lack of specificity, which may result in the early discontinuation of potentially benefitial drugs. International and multidisciplinary initiatives have been formed to overcome this burden by a combination of mechanistic modelling of cardiac electrophysiology and human IPS cell technology. In this talk we give an overview about recent activities and focus on multiple time scale analysis of drug induced early afterdepolarizations, which are one of the main triggers of cardiac arrhythmias.
